Top College Degrees

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Top College Degrees are usually graded by the income potential of the degree. When speaking of particular training and official certifications or licensure, nearly any university degree should have respectable earning potential. Some are much better in contrast to others. Medical Physicians and Lawyers constantly seem to come to mind initially but don’t overlook accountants, engineers, and medical staff.

The minimum financially gratifying university degrees are commonly the more broader areas of study such as English, History, wellness and health, and so on. A recent search turned up an viewpoint of one writer that the top three most useless university degrees have been English/literature, arts/theater, and Womens or African-American studies. It should be acknowledged that these all could be applied to a teaching degree, but by their own merits, they fail as university majors that result in employment and financial prosperity.

I’d like to make it clear that the previous statements are not to be taken as sexist or racist. The make-up of these programs might hold excellent value education-wise but the study course content doesn’t translate into a job or career that can provide a great living. Similarly, succeeding in the theater or arts flds is commonly reliant on talent. The last factor an agent, talent scout, casting director, gallery owner, and so on. is going to ask is whether or not you have a degree in the arts or in theater. There are many areas such as these where “on the job training” is more crucial than having a university degree.

There are a lot of “trades” that depend more on knowledge than education however, a university degree in any one of a lot of engineering fields should usually prep the graduate for an upper level position. It’s for this main reason that a lot of degrees include some aspect of business education and management. With the advent of the fairly new “electronic age”, computer technicians and Information Technology pros should most likely be in high need for decades to come. These training programs typically begin with an Associates Degree that in and of itself can prep a graduate for an entry level job as a computer technician.

It should be noted that in general, the greater the degree level, the larger the revenue potential depending on the field. Most Bachelors Degree holders can out earn an Associates Degree holder, A Master’s Degree out earns a Bachelor’s, and a Doctoral Degree out earns a Master’s. What must be remembered in all this is the additional cost of pursuing greater degree levels. It’s a prudent exercise to explore and weigh the potential cost of a degree against the potential revenue that could be earned by work in the degree field. At times the figures won’t add up. It will pay to do a little research.

When talking about university degrees, it is unavoidable that the talk turns to some of the most rich Individuals who coincidentally all dropped out of college.

  • Michael Dell – Dell Computers
  • Bill Gates – Microsoft
  • Steve Jobs – Apple

There are others of course but this list bears a big punch. One factor that is really worth remembering is that these folks were all really smart, they all dropped out of college so they did at least get some education, and they were all blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit. You might say they are the exception that proves the rule (thathas never made sense to me).

To sum everything up:

A university degree usually causes larger earning power depending on the field
The greater the degree, the larger the income potential
There are degrees that can end up costing more than they are really worth in the job marketplace

Don’t compare yourself to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. These folks were in the appropriate place at the appropriate time with the appropriate know-how and foresight.
