The number of Colleges for nursing has increased greatly in the recent years. Whereas in the olden days only a few colleges offered nursing degrees, nowadays, it seems like every college or university has its own nursing programs to offer. Why is there a sudden change? The change is due to the fact that there are fewer nurses compared to patients. In other words, there is a great demand for nurses because of a shortage of the very much needed professionals.

It is a good thing that colleges for nursing have stepped up to answer the problem. Accredited colleges and universities with nursing programs welcome students to their halls with the purpose of instilling the theories of nursing and equipping students with the needed nursing skills. A good number of the population sees the surge in the number of colleges for nursing as harmful. They attest that with the rate that colleges for nursing are flourishing, there will soon be an excess of nurses.

Several types of nursing degrees are offered in colleges for nursing. An individual can enroll in a two-year nursing program which earns him an associate degree as a registered nurse (ADN). A three-year nursing program can earn a student a nursing diploma while a four-year nursing program will earn him a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). For professional nurses who want to take further studies, colleges for nursing also offer a master’s degree in nursing (MSN). On the other hand, these nursing colleges also offer vocational programs that are still nursing-related. Students can enroll in programs that make them licensed practical nurses (LPN), licensed vocational nurses (LVN), or registered nurses (RN).

The nursing degrees previously mentioned can equip nursing students with the skills and knowledge they will eventually need in the work place, of course relative to the course taken. An RN with a certificate won’t be able to do some tasks that an RN with a degree can. Furthermore, experienced nurses can also take further training to become nurse administrators, nurse anesthetists, nurse educators, nursing midwives, and a lot more options. So, before enrolling in any of the nursing programs offered by colleges for nursing, students have to determine what they really want to achieve and offer in the nursing field.

All of these courses are offered in the many colleges for nursing in the locality or in the region. These nursing colleges may take the form of real and concrete schools complete with chairs, tables, and blackboards or online schools that students may attend through different online means.

Career advancement options for registered nurses vary like in most careers. After practicing as a nursing for awhile some RNs decide they would like to get into the management side of nursing. However unless they have a B.S.N. degree this option may be limited. In today’s world however earning a higher degree may be possible for many even while working.

There are a lot of universities who offer bsn programs geared toward current RNs who do not currently have a bachelors degree. Being able to continue ones health education is good news for those wanting to climb the career ladder. Even if the nurse works full time it is possible to still earn a degree.

In today’s world many people who think about a nursing career may think a nurse is limited to working in a hospital setting and only working with patients. Of course that is what many would expect but todays nurses have many more career options available. If they want to be a nurse but prefer not to work with patients it is possible. If they want to advance their careers it is possible.

It appears to be very common now for people to return back to college to earn a higher degree.This also appears to be the case for RNs that have not yet earned a BS or higher degree. In addition if the nurse chooses to go beyond a BS degree it may be possible. Due to this additional option some RNs are taking the higher degree route instead.

In addition to RNs wanting to enter a management role others are choosing to advance their careers in a different fashion. While many traditional nurses continue working with patients at some level other nursing professionals may decide to take their career in a total different direction.

One such career option is to become a legal nurse which may require additional training. Getting into the legal side could mean that person will no longer work with patients unless they choose. Of course each person has to decide for themselves which career track to take but it is nice to have many options to choose from in ones career.

Legal nursing as a career choice does appear to be of interest to many experienced nurses. Of course not every RN plans to go this route as they like to be with patients to help them and their families. However in this society the need for legal nursing professional exists. Typically an RN who has in interest such as this may first need to have a certain amount of experience working as an RN.

In additional to traditional nursing and legal nursing another career path some may later decide to venture into is that of a case manager. That is many decide they want to help people by being a case manager.

There are a lot of different paths to expand ones career. That is nurses have many paths to consider. This is great news for current nurses and also those who are only now considering the career path. For many people having the additional options later in ones career can help them to decide to initially enter that field.
