When a baby is born, they are cared for by the neonatal nurse that is on duty. Someone that chooses this to be their specialty would consider this to be the best fit for their needs. Possibly the best choice for someone that loves to care for babies and wants to help a parent adjust to being a new parent would be well suited for a level one neonatal nurse position. A level one nurse works directly with the new babies that are healthy but are staying in the nursery while the mother rests. This is something that is not in high demand though because many parents want their newborn to be kept in the room with them, not in a nursery.

Level two neonatal nurse positions are best suited for someone that has a caring heart and that want to be there to help nurse a child back to health after they were born too early or if they have small problems that prevent them from going home immediately. A nurse in this position is responsible for providing therapy for these challenged babies and for getting them ready to go home with their parents. They are able to watch as the child grows stronger and finally gets to go home so long after the mother was released.

A nurse that works in the NICU, or neonatal intensive-care unit, is someone that deals with the tragically ill babies. These children need a lot of extra time and care so that they can hold on to life and grow past their medical issue. A lower level nurse may not be able to handle the responsibilities that come with this unit. They may need specific technologies to help them and the nurses in the NICU will be familiar with these practices and machinery. Someone that is interested in becoming a neonatal nurse must be an RN at least, so they must have completed their ASN or BSN degree. Some locations have a requirement that the nurse have a specific amount of experience before they would be considered for such a position. Anyone that fills a neonatal nurse position will have to take special classes to help them know how to work with the critically ill children. They will have to know about specific medications that are used and that are high risk medications as well as having a good knowledge about specialty equipment like resuscitation and ventilators. When a child is critically ill, special procedures and equipment will likely be needed so the nurse must know how to work effectively with them.

An RN with a certificate won’t be able to do some tasks that an RN with a degree can. Furthermore, experienced nurses can also take further training to become nurse administrators, nurse anesthetists, nurse educators, nursing midwives, and a lot more options. So, before enrolling in any of the nursing programs offered by colleges for nursing, students have to determine what they really want to achieve and offer in the nursing field.

Career advancement options for registered nurses vary like in most careers. After practicing as a nursing for awhile some RNs decide they would like to get into the management side of nursing. However unless they have a B.S.N. degree this option may be limited. In today’s world however earning a higher degree may be possible for many even while working.

There are a lot of universities who offer bsn programs geared toward current RNs who do not currently have a bachelors degree. Being able to continue ones health education is good news for those wanting to climb the career ladder. Even if the nurse works full time it is possible to still earn a degree.

In today’s world many people who think about a nursing career may think a nurse is limited to working in a hospital setting and only working with patients. Of course that is what many would expect but todays nurses have many more career options available. If they want to be a nurse but prefer not to work with patients it is possible. If they want to advance their careers it is possible.

It appears to be very common now for people to return back to college to earn a higher degree.This also appears to be the case for RNs that have not yet earned a BS or higher degree. In addition if the nurse chooses to go beyond a BS degree it may be possible. Due to this additional option some RNs are taking the higher degree route instead.

In addition to RNs wanting to enter a management role others are choosing to advance their careers in a different fashion. While many traditional nurses continue working with patients at some level other nursing professionals may decide to take their career in a total different direction.

One such career option is to become a legal nurse which may require additional training. Getting into the legal side could mean that person will no longer work with patients unless they choose. Of course each person has to decide for themselves which career track to take but it is nice to have many options to choose from in ones career.

Legal nursing as a career choice does appear to be of interest to many experienced nurses. Of course not every RN plans to go this route as they like to be with patients to help them and their families. However in this society the need for legal nursing professional exists. Typically an RN who has in interest such as this may first need to have a certain amount of experience working as an RN.

In additional to traditional nursing and legal nursing another career path some may later decide to venture into is that of a case manager. That is many decide they want to help people by being a case manager.

There are a lot of different paths to expand ones career. That is nurses have many paths to consider. This is great news for current nurses and also those who are only now considering the career path. For many people having the additional options later in ones career can help them to decide to initially enter that field.
