Finding College Scholarships
Sunday, March 14th, 2010You have graduated and looking for college scholarships. Congratulations are in order for completing your primary education, now you are ready for your secondary education. University life can really be a lot of freedom for students to handle. They are waiting to get away from home. But one thing you should remember is that with freedom comes responsibility.
Financial responsibilities can be the most important of all the new stuff that comes with graduating. You need to keep an eye on your spending and save as much money as you can. A scholarship is a good way to save money. Scholarships can allow you to pay your living expenses while at college without going into debt. Getting a scholarship can take some work, but being able to go through college with as little debt as possible is very beneficial.
The first thing to do when looking into scholarships is to sit down with pen and paper and make a list of as many as you are aware of. Doing this will allow you to have all the scholarships you may qualify for listed right in front of you, and then you can start sorting through them. You want to try and make your list as long as possible. If you don?t know where to start looking for scholarship programs you can go online, or talk with your school counselor. There are thousands of scholarships out there, including scholarships for women. By simply typing in “scholarships” on Google you will be surprised to find thousands of scholarships you may not have known to exist.
There are even internet sites which gives you a free list of scholarships available to graduating high school students. Do a lot of research, the more you find, the better. When making a list of scholarship programs you should take note of the various criteria for each sholarship. After you have all the different scholarship programs you then sort out your list of scholarships.
You should make it a point to apply to as many scholarships as you are able, the wider you cast your net, the better. Even if you do not fit all the criteria, the worst case scenario for what will happen is you will not get a scholarship. Just remember if there are no takers you may end up being awarded the scholarship, even if you don’t fit perfectly. There are so many scholarships that do not get claimed just because there were simply no applicants; so for that off chance, put in your application. Even after you have applied to them all keep your list of Scholarships. You can use this list to mark off your approvals/denials, allowing you to see how you are doing.
Additionally, even if you plan on going to a distance learning college course of study, there are still scholarships avaliable for you.
Another good tip to keep in mind is to also apply to the scholarships which have lesser rewards. You will have better chances at it because they are typically in less demand. If you only get five to ten these little scholarships it can end up putting more money in your pocket than one large one. The key is to cast a huge net, applying to every single scholarship that you may fit for.
