Graduates Careers Downturn Means New Graduates Are Considering Worse Paid Careers And Thinking About Work From Home Ideas.
Sunday, May 22nd, 2011With youth employment levels significantly hit by the economic recession it’s becoming apparent that recently students are not protected from the ravages of economic difficulties. Many graduates are reducing their expectations and applying for less lucrative positions then they doubtless expected when they first started out on their degree studies. Work from home opportunities, for example Online jobs are being contemplated even if only as a temporary fix until the economy begins to pick up.
The spin off though is likely to be numbers of graduates establishing themselves in Work from home ventures. We could find in years to come that the current scarcity of work opportunities has driven many graduates, and others, into a self employed lifestyle and this could cause a skills deficit later as graduates enjoy the rewards of running their own enterprises. It is also true that people who work from home become accustomed to a no commuting working habit and become unwilling to seek out more traditionally based jobs.
There appears to be however no evidence that graduates are more likely to succeed in business than non graduates. Academic capability does not particularly prepare anyone for the cut and thrust of controlling a business so the work from home self employment growth could well be cooled by some business failures. Or it could turn out that many who put their toe in the water of self employment discover it simply not to their taste and go back to the job market in better times.
On the whole though, it does seem likely that the present economic downturn might encourage a new generation of entrepreneurs. And an increase in the incidence of working from home would also be a welcome tendency. As is normally the case it will most likely be the young, degree educated or otherwise, who provide the lead in this likely working trend.
