Scholarship Ideas
Saturday, August 28th, 2010So you have graduated high school and now must turn your attention towards college. Congratulations on completing high school and welcome to college life. University life is just as much about freedom as it is about taking the next step in your life. They are waiting to get away from home. But one item to keep in mind is that with freedom comes responsibility.
The financial responsibilities that come with the freedom are likely the most important. You need to stay up on your expenses and save as much money as you can. A scholarship is a good way to save money. You can pay for your expenses without getting a student loan. Getting a scholarship can take some work, but being able to go through college with as little debt as possible is very beneficial.
The first thing to do when looking into scholarships is to sit down with pen and paper and make a list of as many as you are aware of. Making a list of scholarships will help you see how many are available, and how many you may qualify for. You want to try and put together a list as long as possible. If you don?t know about many scholarship programs you can go online, or talk with your school counselor. There are thousands of scholarships available in the world, even special scholarships for women. By using a simple search engine you will be surprised to find many scholarship programs looking for all kinds of different criteria.
There are even internet sites which gives you a free list of scholarships available to college students. Do a lot of research, the more you find, the better. When making your list of scholarship programs you should note down even the criteria for scholarships. Once you have all the different scholarship programs you then sort out your list of scholarships.
Apply for all those for which you qualify and even for those which you meet some criteria. Even if you do not fit all the criteria, the worst case scenario for what will happen is you will not obtain the scholarship. Just remember if there are no takers you may end up being awarded the scholarship, even if you don’t fit perfectly. There are so many scholarships which go waste just because there were just no applicants; so who knows you might get it. Even after you have applied keep your list of available scholarships. You will know for which ones you got and which ones you did not.
Additionally, even if you plan on going to a distance learning college program, there are still scholarships avaliable for you.
Another good tip to keep in mind is to also apply to the ones which have smaller award amounts. You will have better chances at these because they are typically in less demand. If you can get a handful of these small scholarships it can end up putting more money in your pocket than one large one. The key is to cast a huge net, applying to every single scholarship that you may fit for.
