Our Educational System Has it All Wrong

Saturday, June 6th, 2009
Before we can say what is wrong with our educational system, we should define the term. The purpose of the educational system is to:

Pass on Knowledge

Relate relevant issues to each other

Prepare individuals and groups for future situations

The passing on of knowledge is one of the oldest civilized functions. The passing on of knowledge was originally done in the form of stories told when people got together. Once languages were written, then came libraries which were repositories for knowledge.

The passion to record and relate all knowledge has remained a goal of scholars since the invention of libraries. There is no better example of that than the World Wide Web. It’s original intended purpose was provide a central access site where all knowledge could be retained and for related items to be linked to each other.

The need for cross transfer of information has long been recognized as a needed but thorny issue. The issue is thorny because of the difficulty in execution of a noble idea.

As was mentioned earlier, large well organized enterprises have developed systems, involving SMEs (subject matter experts), which are specifically designed to enhance cross transfer of new ideas and concepts within and without their organizations. As in all such situations, this is not a perfect solution, but it is practical.

The preparation of individuals and groups for future situations is the single most extensive function of our educational system This is as it should be. This preparation process has three components. The first is the educational system as a whole. The second component is technical education/training. The third component is vocational education/training.

The functions identified as numbers two and three can arguably be included in the first category. Because their more specialized characteristics, they have differences which need to be identified. The above classification was chosen as the way to do that.

Our Educational System also has three distinct components. They are University Educational Systems,

High School Educational Systems and Grade School

Educational Systems.

The University Educational System has several components. These are Graduate School, Undergraduate School and two year Associate Degree Programs.

Graduate Schools are responsible for the preparation of scholars who will perpetuate the present customs. They are responsible for basic research in both general and technical areas. They are responsible for technical qualification and training and for general managerial training and qualifications.

Undergraduate Schools are responsible for entry level technical and general training. This includes managerial training. Let us not forget the original reason for the establishment of Universities which is to spread the knowledge of social and philosophical disciplines. These are the “liberal arts”.

The “Junior” Colleges serve two purposes. The first is prepare students to enter Undergraduate Schools. The second purpose is to provide training for entry level positions in our enterprise system. This often includes vocational training.

High Schools are responsible to complete the basic educational training skills of math, reading, writing, science and history. They are responsible to make their graduates employable in the enterprise system.

Grade Schools are responsible for to teach the basic knowledge skills and to prepare its graduates for High School.

As is evident from the above description of the responsibilities of the various levels of education, its mission is both diverse and complex. Compounding the diversity issue, is the fact that both Graduate Schools and Undergraduate Schools are curriculum driven to train the next generation. These schools often do not look at all of their functional responsibilities in a balanced manner. Commonly, the matter of qualifying graduates for employment in our enterprise system is not given sufficient emphasis.

Certain disciplines are not covered in sufficient breadth and depth. For example courses in Production Management do not explain that all systems, production and administrative, are best modeled as an analog hydraulic system. This fact is of great impact for those entering the enterprise system. Because they would know that in hydraulic systems constraints limit throughput and that their elimination improves the flow. This then prepares the graduate to make improvements on the ways in which things are done within the organization for which they work.

A similar situation exists with the discipline of work measurement standards. The discipline was developed in the early part of the 20th century yet wide spread knowledge of its benefits do not exist. This is a problem of both the enterprise system and the educational system.

Simply stated, productivity improvement is key to our future economic growth. Increased productivity is achieved only by improved methods and procedures (better ways of doing things). The majority of enterprises have opportunities for systems and procedural improvements within their own organizations. Employees who have the proper knowledge can find and recommend improvements for those systems.

Knowing how to accomplish these programs makes an employee more valuable to the enterprise. The addition of the production facts and work measurement to a broader audience can be of great importance to our enterprise system in general.

At four levels of the educational system, the function of preparing graduates for employment was mentioned as existing. These levels are Graduate School, Undergraduate School, Junior College and High School.

Graduate schools often need to be more proactive with the members of the enterprise system to learn what employee requirements are for a Phd or a Masters Degree candidate.

They can also determine the blend of skills needed.

Undergraduate Schools can also benefit from being more proactive with members of the enterprise system. In this way, they can also determine the blend of skills most wanted by the enterprise system.

Because Junior Colleges often provide vocational training, they are often more aware of the realities of the work place than are other educational groupings. One of the needs of the Junior Colleges is to find out such information as how literate is computer literate? Does every one need to know how to use spread sheets? The source of this type of information is of course, the enterprise community.

High Schools are last educational institution which most students ever see. This makes their role in our educational process a critical one. More students will have the need to know how to get a job and keep a job than will go to another higher educational level. If retention levels increase, the above will be even more the case. High Schools need to provide students with training which employers want to be present in their employees. In order to know what these requirements are, contacts with the enterprise system are needed.

Here are some thoughts about the drop out situation. Many of those out do so because they see no reason to continue school. Their belief is that school provides them with no skills which can get them a job. Further they have little knowledge of the importance of keeping a job. This says that it is super important for the High School to know what is expected of an enterprise system job applicant and teach those skills. This requires both the school board and the educators to become aware to the real student needs and to also know how the local enterprise system works.

Remember the Proactive approach taken by the large and well organized businesses. Similar systems need to be set up with in the academic community. The educational system needs to look at its responsibilities from a functional point of view. This includes taking the needs of the student into account as well as the needs of employers.

More emphasis has to be placed at all levels from High Schools on up to make graduates more employable. Such efforts at the High School level will tend to lower the dropout rates of the High Schools which participate.

The subject matter relating to improving productivity, is not presently being given enough emphasis in any part of the educational system. This is to the detriment of the potential employee.

Management in most enterprises is not aware of the productivity improvements which can and should be employed within the organization. The value and uses of the tools discussed here need to be brought to the attention of senior management at all levels of activity.

Distance Education Raises Some Insightful Questions About Online Learning

Friday, June 5th, 2009
The growing demands of distance education by on line consumers has provided an opportunity for many new educational providers to meet consumer learner’s needs. With this proliferation of on line providers, learners are raising insightful questions about the on line distance education experience. A number of important questions are being asked by the consumer and include the following:

What is the cost per credit hour of my on line learning experience?

Is my on line educational experience going to be a high quality experience?

Is the educational provider recognized by an accreditation body for higher learning?

Will the educational provider assist with job search following graduation?

Is the educational provider ranked among peer review groups and organizations?

The question of how to select a provider of service always follows the cost per credit hour of the on line learning experience. After you determine what you can afford or what you are willing to pay for the experience, the selection process begins regarding the selection of an educational provider. This is a difficult decision to make and here are a few questions to consider whenever attempting to make the decision:

Do I want my on line experience to be provided by a four year public or private university?

Do I want my on line experience to be provided by a specialty provider of on line education?

Community colleges offer on line courses and are usually part of a state’s higher education system of education. Is a community college acceptable?

Do I want a technical education? If so, do I want a specialty provider?

These are questions that deserve a reasonable amount of research and exploration before committing your resources to a particular provider. In addition to acquiring information from the educational provider of services, ask friends, family members, professionals within your area of interest, as well as graduates from the prospective provider. A little time researching your educational provider will save you time and money with your educational experience

The Role Of American Business In Education

Thursday, June 4th, 2009
If we accept the premise that education is a lifetime process then well structured, sustainable business-education partnerships become essential. The average American student attends school for 12 to 14 years. Most of these young people will enter a career in business or industry that will last 30 to 40 years. However, there is almost no communication between the education and business communities during the years of learning and training. The result is that most of the students exiting American schools are unprepared for successful employment.

Bridging this communication gap through business-education partnerships can lead to a successful experience for everyone involved. At an early age students will develop skills, learn to adjust to the demands of the workplace and become better future employees. Men or women in business will derive both personal and financial satisfaction by developing a close relationship with educators. The benefits of partnership are detailed in Facing the Future Together, a book that focuses directly on how-to construct a successful business-education partnership and the mutual benefits that result from this collaboration.

A business person reading this article might have some of the following questions and concerns:

Q. “How would I even begin to navigate the bureaucratic halls of education and get involved?”

A. Actually it’s not that difficult. Education works very much like business. Make your initial contact with a decision-maker. Consult Facing the Future Together if you need assistance in developing a plan of partnership. Schedule a meeting with a local school district superintendent. Explain your desire to establish a business-education partnership. After obtaining the superintendent’s support, select a school. Ask for an introduction to the school principal. Like business, when you have the support of the education CEO things will happen and you are well on your way to a successful partnership.

Q. “How much money is this going to cost me?”

A. A successful partnership is not about money. The real value of this partnership is the people-to-people relationships it engenders not in the amount of money that changes hands.

Q. I’m not a teacher. I run a business. So what can I offer as a partner for a school?

A. You have a great deal to offer and to gain from this partnership. You and your employees can act as mentors, tutors, career day speakers, demonstrate the latest technology in your business and show how it applies to math, science or English curriculum. You can host field-study trips for students, give them an opportunity to volunteer at your business site or create student internships. Activities like these can motivate and inspire students to perform at higher levels in school in preparation for entering a career.

Traditionally, it is the educator who makes the first move toward partnership. But as we have discussed, this need not be the case. Everyone wins when business-education partnerships are formed.

“Some see private enterprise as a predatory target to be shot, others as a cow to be milked, but few are those who see it as a sturdy horse pulling the wagon.”

-Winston Churchill

As described in the quote from Sir Winston, business in America is an influential and sturdy horse. For most Americans our economic and social well-being is tied closely to the experience of business. We feel more secure when consumer spending and the stock market show growth and unemployment figures are in decline. When business and education are harnessed together in partnership the delivery system for education becomes more efficient and relevant.

Facing the Future Together is written for the business person as well as the educator. Educators are often criticized for having little or no contact with the outside “real” world. Criticism of education by the business community, the media and politicians has often led educators to isolate themselves. But teachers, counselors and administrators should never work in isolation. Students will benefit far more from support derived from partnership with the business community than from criticism by those who may be their future employers.

Educational Toys for Babies

Thursday, June 4th, 2009
Educational toys are fun for babies and provide another tool to stimulate learning and brain development in your infant. There are many ways to teach a child and tens of thousands of educational toys on the market to help parents in the endeavor. The challenge for parents, child care providers and educators is to choose from the vast array of educational toys available in a way that creates a balance of learning techniques, is age appropriate, and most of all fun. This article will provide basic facts about; how babies learn, types of educational toys available and examples of each.

How Babies Learn

It is quite surprising the rate at which babies learn and develop. Learning begins in the womb and continues throughout childhood. In early life how a child learns centers largely around the relationship with the parents. At least until the child starts preschool, the job of stimulating and satisfying baby’s desire to learn falls primarily to the parents.

While babies respond to their parent’s voice there are many other sounds they find interesting. When parents are choosing educational toys for babies they should look for toys that have sound, colors that are bright and contrasted like red, black and white, and have interesting textures that babies like to touch.

Sounds

Babies’ respond to sound and some of the best educational toys include rattles and musical toys. Soothing music such as lullabies is usually best. Auditory and musical toys are known to stimulate logical thinking and imagery in babies and in adults for that matter.

One good educational auditory toy is the Electronic Metal Keys. These keys are good for a child 6 months and up. The Electronic Metal Keys are an imitation of the parent’s car keys. However, the Electronic Metal Key toy is safe for the child to chew on and has a push button that emits sounds like a car horn, doorbell, ignition, and remote control door.

Sight

Bright colors in educational toys stimulate baby’s vision. Look for toys with strong color contrast and patterns. A good one to look for is a colorful crib mobile that emits music, has different textures, curves and symmetry.

One such educational toy is the Bath Time Fishing toy. This item is appropriate for babies 12 months and up. It’s a great prop to use during a baby bath. Making the bath as fun as possible can also help overcome any resistance or fear your child may have during the bathing process. The toy is bright in color, has a rod and reel, and the strong magnets attached to its tails allow for easy catching. Bath Time Fishing is priced at around $16.00 dollars.

Fine motor play

Fine motor play educational toys are used to stimulate coordination in baby’s finger and eye movements. One such toy aimed at developing the hand-eye coordination is “Counting Pals”, which is aimed at babies 6 months and up. Counting Pals are 10 soft and squishy colored blocks. They can be stacked, tossed, chewed by the baby. Counting pals also provides animal illustrations that will enchant the baby. Counting Pals educational toy is priced at around $12.00.

Cognitive Skills

There are some educational toys that promote cognitive skills in babies, which is to say they stimulate the child’s memory, how they picture things and their problem solving skills. Educational toys like building blocks, activity boxes or puzzles are a good purchase for your child. The puzzles can deal with numbers, letters or pictures; it does not matter, but they should be fairly easy for a baby to grasp and manipulate.

Education Loans: your Future Lies in your Hands!

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009
Dropping out of college? Quitting your chase for higher education? Forgetting your dreams because you need to fulfil certain familial financial obligations? Stop!

If your reasons for not pursuing higher education are one of the above, then you are simply looking for excuses. Today, money is no longer a factor when it comes to chasing your dreams. People take loans for holidays, buying homes and cars, making house repairs, so why shouldn’t you step up and borrow money for something that’s worth it. Education Loans are what we’ve been offering and what you’ve been looking for… Let’s get a little more informed on these Education Loans.

Education Loans are loans taken to fund higher education – be it college, university or private education. Besides paying for tuition fees, Education Loans also pay for hostel accommodation (in case of residential programmes), study material like books, computers, stationery and also for student travel and mess facilities. Education Loans are therefore an all-in-one package, assisting students in pursuing their dreams, while allowing them additional maintenance facilities to make life easy.

Education Loans vary in the amounts they offer, the interest rate charged on the amount and also in the different terms and conditions that make up the loan.

The amount will vary, depending on the kind or grade of the college or university. It will also depend on what the student wants the Education Loan to cover.

The interest rate on Education Loans is equal to the prevailing rate of inflation.

A student can repay the Education Loan after he has completed his education and not immediately after he takes the loan. The repayment terms for Education Loans are quite lenient, and if a person is not able to find employment or his salary is below £10,000, his repayment is suspended until he gets a job and starts earning a higher salary.

Terms and conditions depend on your situation and your financial credibility.

Education Loans are secured and unsecured.

Secured Education Loans allow larger loan amounts. They insist on placement of collateral and therefore offer lower interest rates, longer repayment terms and flexible conditions.

Unsecured Education Loans are just the reverse. They do not necessitate collateral and therefore grant smaller loan amounts, charge higher interest rates, fix limited repayment terms and are very strict about your credit history and other such details. The unsecured category is specially meant for individuals who do not have large assets to their name and also for those who do not want to risk seizure of their assets.

Education Loans are available at banks, private lenders, financial institutions and sometimes also at the university or college you are considering enrolling into. Online Education Loans are the best option today. It’s like spreading your net over larger seas to make a bigger catch. Give yourself the best education so that you can reap its benefits in the future!

Why Adolescents Should be Provided With Sex Education

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009
The issue of whether schools should offer sex education to their students and how explicit these lessons should be has been a controversial one for decades. It always seems to initiate disputes. In 1994 Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders in the US, was fired for stating that it is essential that students be taught about masturbation as part of sex education. At that time Bill Clinton and his conservative Republicans had been leading the country, who felt strongly about shielding children from corrupt sex talk. Of course when Clinton’s own sexual life with Monika Lewinsky came flashing through headlines on newspapers, TV Channels and then on the Internet, nothing was hidden from anyone and with this, all sorts of sexual content became available for all (Irvine, 2002). The Internet has proved to be a major catalyst in the spreading of sexual material, primarily because of the lack of control over its content. Nowadays sexual content is manifested to children in numerous ways through the media, where magazines, books, television, movies and also songs exhibit sexual material.

Today’s children are well exposed to sex talk. If it is not made available for them through refined sex education in schools, they will probably have to confront the vulgar and obscene facet of it elsewhere. Sexuality should be openly discussed since it determines so much in our lives. Children should be educated and prepared about the hormonal changes they will undergo in their years of adolescence and how they will experience unfamiliar emotions (Gale, 2005). With sex education, adolescents will better understand the reasons and causes of their fluctuating emotions and desires (Harrison, 2000). They will appreciate being trusted with the provided knowledge and more importantly, will be aware of the risks and the potential aftermath, which will result to them making healthier and more sagacious decisions regarding their sexuality.

SIECUS (Sexual Information and Education Council of the United States) which was founded in 1964 spent years struggling since people were unwilling to approach it. The foundation had been cofounded by Mary Calderone who had made it a goal of her life to get people to “say sex” (Irvine, 2002, p.17). “Open sexual discussion would foster socially responsible sexuality”, this is the principal the SIECUS foundation followed (Irvine, 2002). However, this was difficult since people hesitated. Many confuse sex education with lectures promoting abstinence. The foundation supported abstinence but at the same time believed in ‘sexual fulfillment for all’ (Irvine, 2002, p.18). It was not fond of traditional and religious limitations because of how it led to guilt and embarrassment of sexually active individuals. In the early sixties, sex education barely existed. It was said that the bathroom walls were more edifying then the books in those times. Books in the mid sixties had become a little less restrictive and now focused on dating and “appropriate gender role behavior” (Irvine, 2002). Some authors began to mention sexual pleasure in their books, intending to inform the youth, however avoided to discuss issues such as masturbation, premarital sex and homosexuality. Such issues would create controversy(Irvine, 2002). The youth of the country had been progressing in all other fields. They experimented with LSD, the protested against the Vietnam War and marched in civil rights demonstrations. The country was undergoing serious social changes and sex educators of the time put in tremendous effort to keep quiet about sex however they were incapable of holding back the sexual revolution that followed (Irvine, 2002).

Premarital sex no longer remained uncommon amongst the new and rebellious generation. The rate of unmarried pregnant women soared. Bitterness about the well-being of women began debates of whether sex education should be enhanced. Abortion, which was considered a major and one of the most prominent of crimes, was the only option for unmarried women (Irvine, 2002). It was not dealt with professionally thus lacked sanitation and proper technique and at times, could be fatal. The birth control pill had been introduced in 1960 but the youth remained ignorant because of the frail sex talk. Black pregnant women who were unmarried were considered burdens and white pregnant unmarried women were looked up as “species of the mental state”(Irvine, 2002). Gradually homosexuals overtly confronted the world, expressing their ‘queer’ sexuality and they were also looked down at. The nation began dividing into groups, people were not willing to understand one another instead many made an effort into showing themselves off as the ‘right kind’ by dressing conservatively. Slowly magazines such as Playboy and America’s first lesbian magazine were published(Irvine,  2002). The new generation had changed the face of ‘youth sexuality’ and the previous generation was forced to accept it. However, although the youth had changed concepts of sex, they remained unaware of the consequences such as STDs, the nerve wrecking stress of early pregnancy and sex addiction. It was vital for them to be educated for them to take control of their sexuality.

In the present world, Media has the most apparent influence in children and teenagers, from which they tend to mimic or reproduce what they see in magazines, television or what they hear in songs. Headings such as “What everyone is really doing in bed”, which was published Glamour June 2005, are customary. These are made to attract customers and usually target those who are not familiar with the content (Plante, 2006). Some would buy them for entertainment while others would use it as a source of education. The content of the article may or may not be reliable, it could be the truth or it could just be what appeals to buyers but such headings are enough to lure assailable minds. Advertisements also involve a level of sexuality. For example, the bare back of a woman is used to promote perfume. In movies all sort of sexual scenes are displayed. In songs, especially RnB and Rap, lyrics could get very detailed, sometimes vulgar. The Internet is said to be responsible for distributing 90% of the pornography available for everyone. According to the BBC Tech News 1% of the millions of links offered by Google and Yahoo Geocities lead to pornographic material.

After the increase of STDs, AIDs especially, institutes realized the importance of sex education while many conservatives believed that abstinence was the right option. Without education, children were being made ‘‘vulnerable to potentially deadly diseases’’ (Gale, 2005, p.10). The average child today is exposed to sexual imagery, from photos in magazines, visuals on TV, lyrics in songs and of course just their peers. With this, they are becoming sexually active at an earlier age and many are now caught in the viscous circles of STDs. In the year 2005, according to the Centers for Disease Control and the Kaiser Family Foundation, 65% of sexually transmitted infections are carried by people under the age of 24 (Gale, 2005). It is now being debated how much needs to be taught to students. The main concern seems to be the fast spreading STDs therefore many sex educators emphasize on the risks one takes when deciding to have sex and also contraception. Another serious problem is that adolescent tend to get very curious and have a desire to try things they have not before, therefore they usually seem to have a significant amount of interest in the subject of ‘sex’. They have a tendency to develop endless questions and if these questions are left unanswered, they will take action in order to solve the mysteries themselves. Also, they are rebellious and so telling them ‘just say no’ will not work.

Sexuality is innate and natural. Sex talk should not be taboo. It is in the human nature to desire sex after a certain age. In order to avoid awkwardness and discomfort it is best to learn about it and be educated about the procedure. Over the decades we have seen the consequences of not openly discussing the issue, imposing abstinence and not providing the youth with enough information. It is important for them to become aware of what is presented in their surroundings by the media and peers. It is essential for them to recognize their own sexuality, are they hetro/homosexual? They need to be familiar with the changes they would experience during the years of puberty and know why they react in certain ways to particular things. They need to be well aware of the potential consequences of engaging their selves sexually. It should be discussed with comfort to let them know that they are being trusted and are expected to act responsibly.

Is College Education More Valuable Than a Job Experience

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009
Job Experience or education degree? What values more? It is a discussion that has been going on for quite some time now. And no definite conclusion has still been drawn for the simple reason that it’s subjective and it really depends on individuals. Of course, the value of a college education degree cannot be paralleled to that of a job experience. Still the global job market can boast of innumerable examples of individuals who are at the peak of success without attaining a graduate or master’s degree or higher education for that matter.

For many it becomes difficult to continue school because of soaring costs of education & if one thinks that it is more important for him to earn money rather than going for a full-time degree course. Previously a high school diploma was considered enough to assure an entry-level job where the profile is handling basic tasks. Besides, they are given on-the-job training  to hone their skills. At the same time, they had enough number of years to count as their job experience. As a result, people hardly changed job and preferred to stay with that company in their entire career.

These traditions, however, are no longer practiced because today’s job market provides individuals with better opportunity. An individual changes jobs, as soon as they are offered a better growth opportunity and a few extra thousands are added in the pay package. Hence, it will not be wrong to say an individual changes around nine to ten jobs in his entire career. Considering this, employers nowadays hesitate to spend on internal training and hires individuals who does not need to undergo development programs and most preferably has higher education degree to his credit. Hence, we can say that there are many reasons why a college degree has fair advantage when it comes to career growth in the long run.

Employment Benefits

A college graduate is a highly attractive candidate for recruiters. As a holder of a graduate degree, you are at an advantage to choose from a variety of job offers. You do not have to go for an entry-level job but can join in the middle management at the very first time. No doubts you will earn much more than those without proper degrees. On the other hand, people with job experience without college degree does not have comprehensive knowledge to handle the business.

Meet Tougher Job Requirements

A college graduate comparatively has better interpersonal & more critical skills to his credit. During their years of college education, they learn & assess the various strategies and factors driving today’s market. They are better exposed to the ever-changing market and can analyze problems & take smart decisions that ultimately results in the profitability of the company.

Career Training Provided

A college graduate is provided all the necessary career training, they possess specific skills and are learned to perform jobs with detail and understand client mentality at the same time. Some institutes also provides internship to the students at other companies, thereby helping them acquire practical knowledge and greater exposure. Therefore, employers always prefer to recruit holders of bachelor degree.

 Increased Income

Investment in higher education is always rewarding. Whatever you spend on your degree course, will return to you as your attractive pay package. You spend hefty amount to pursue college education but you are assured of  higher earnings that is much more than your colleagues who doesn’t possess graduate degree.

Economic Benefit to the Nation

It is rightly said that a nation cannot progress if its citizens lag behind in education. No doubt a nation earns and progresses if the number of college graduates increases every year. Because of higher education, a nation’s tax revenue increases, greater manpower results in greater productivity which results in the advancement of the country as a  whole.

 Social Value of College Education

It has been found that higher education is highly related to good citizenship and family values. Graduates have more sense about the right upbringing of their child, the elements that can progress or harm the society, etc. In a way, their practicality helps in the progress of the society and the country in the long run.

As it is clear above that a college educations proves more beneficial for a person, it becomes imperative that more number of people participate in higher education and fill the gap that arises due to the non-participation in college education. Increased college education will not only help the student to mark an edge, but also benefit the society and the country as a whole.

However, it would be wrong to say that only holders of college and higher education can be successful in their careers. Today a number of institutions offer online degree courses for all professions. What is Continuing Education?

Monday, June 1st, 2009
Continuing education in general is quite similar to adult education since it is also intended for adult learners, especially those adults who are beyond traditional undergraduate college or university age. However, it is wrong to club continuing education with other educational programs such as vocational training. As its name suggests, it is a continuation of education. The student of continuing education already has an education prior to taking up continuing education.

Continuing education in the simplest term is a form of post-secondary learning activities and programs. Some of the programs under continuing education may include non-degree career training, degree credit courses by non-traditional students, formal personal enrichment courses, workforce training, experiential learning, and self-directed learning which is done through online interest clubs and groups or personal research activities.

Many universities and colleges in the US cater to continuing education programs. Often there is either a division or a school of continuing education, which is also at times given names such as university extension or extension school. Continuing education involves both credit-granting courses as well as non-credit-granting courses. Such non-credit-granting courses are often taken for personal, non-vocational enrichment. There are many community colleges in the US that cater to such programs.

It is not only students who need continuing education, but also professionals who need it to update their knowledge and skill set. In fact, it is a compulsory for people practicing certain professions. Licensing authorities in a number of fields make continuing education compulsory on members who hold licenses to practice within a particular profession. The licenses to practice their profession are issued for a fixed term and are to be renewed after the expiry of this term. If they fail to update themselves through continuing education, their licenses are not renewed. This is done to encourage professionals to expand their knowledge base and keep pace with new developments. This may be achieved through college or university coursework, extension courses or conferences and seminars attendance.

The method and format of delivering continuing education includes conventional classroom lectures as well as distance learning. Students who enroll for continuing education in a college or university often opt for classroom and laboratory classes. However, much weight is given to distance learning as maximum of those who opt for continuing education are working people who have little or no time to attend classroom lectures.

In such distance learning, education is imparted through CD-ROM material, videotapes, and broadcast programming. Education online is also one area that has seen fast development in recent years. Material for study is delivered over the Internet. In fact online degrees are pursued by many students and professional who finds them very convenient. Students can earn some extra pocket money working part time and professional can pursue an online degree that will help them in career growth.

Other than CD-ROM material, videotapes, and broadcast programming, continuing education is also delivered through independent study and use of conference-type group study. Again the Internet plays a big role here. These groups with similar interests meet together online and discuss and exchanges ideas and knowledge. These online communities are very effective in sharing knowledge and new findings.

Another way of facilitating continuing education is through seminars and workshops. A combination of traditional or conventional, distance, and conference-type study, or two of these three types, may be used for a particular continuing education course or program.
