Educational Toys – Our Partners in Raising Smarter Babies

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Every eight seconds, more and more babies are being born all over the world. Every minute, more and more parents are thinking of ways to make their children the best among the rest. These parents are more likely to explore the whole world just to be able to give everything to their kids to make them grow smarter and wiser. They believe that educational toys are absolutely their partners in raising smarter babies. Hence, most, if not all, these parents will look for every educational toy they can grab in the market today.

But what makes an educational toy different from an ordinary toy? Essentially, these toys, just like other toys, are simply invented for and to be used by children. Any person can argue that an educational toy is in fact any toy. The only difference they have is how the children perceive these toys or the reality of their significance.

Ideally, an educational toy, which is believe to be our partners in raising smarter babies advances intellectuality and imagination, and promotes the emotional, physical, and social development of children. These toys pave ways to faster learning of children with new skills. Therefore, what really makes this toy different from other usual toys is the child’s learning and development associated with playing with them.

Simple wooden blocks are actually a good start for preschool children to instigate learning the elementary principles of science and causal relationships, as well as patience and basic hand-eye coordination. Elementary children can be encouraged to play with interlocking manipulative toys like Legos or puzzles to further improve their mind-body coordination, virtue of patience, and appreciation of spatial relationships.

All educators hold the same opinion that is, the most effective, most natural, and the best method of educating children is through play. Among the most important elements in teaching children are educational toys, developmental games, and learning materials. But there are really no rules in deciding the right choice of toys and games for your children. You can try experimenting from simple books and educational toys moving gradually to more intricate educational games, science activities, and puzzles.

If there is actually a rule, it can only be one that is, to go after your child’s interests. You can tag along your kid’s interests be it play dough clays or electronic keyboard or pirate games as you will never go wrong with these. For sure, they will inspire your children’s imagination, senses, and cleverness. Let them express themselves either through academic subjects (i.e., music, art, history, language) or sports (i.e., ball games, skating, ballet).

There are indeed so many ways to raise our children to be smarter and wiser people. We have all kinds of educational toys available in the market. We just have to know well what are outside there and learn how to listen and support our children’s interests. We can give them heaps of educational toys but if the child has no interest, then it cannot serve its function to educate the child.

Make sure you will introduce your children to variety of educational toys and when they already choose one or two, you just have to guide them along the way. Remember, these educational toys are just our partners in raising smarter babies but they are not the sole key to success. As the saying goes, Nine tenths of education is Encouragement. Parents as well as educators just have to make these children realize that learning is not so boring after all, but rather a fun development of themselves.

Sponsor Education– Gracious Effort for the Betterment of Children

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Education is a basic right of every child as it is the prime factor responsible for the overall development of the child. But this right is often violated in different countries due to the social evil of mass illiteracy. To fight from the illiteracy several social service organizations support government concentrating only in the field of education to eliminate illiteracy from the country. Apart from them, education sponsoring societies also play a crucial role in the collection and disbursement of valuable funds. In order to remove illiteracy from the society it is the duty of every citizen to come and contribute in this noble cause and at least sponsor education of a single child to encourage them to avail the basic right of education.

Usually the children are deprived of this basic right due to poverty and lack of resources. For majority of parents, the aim is to provide their child with only food and shelter. Education is something that they didn’t even think of. In order to motivate these parents to send their children to school, they need to be properly convinced as well as monetary supported. Therefore social service organization provides finances and other resources to these sections of people so they agree to send their children to school. To find sponsors for these children and collect funds for financing education for the underprivileged children, special societies are set up, which are generally affiliated to an NGO or work independently.

Societies set up for sponsoring education work solely for the cause of securing funds from various means and grouping them together. From the collected fund these societies then sponsors education of various children. Funds are collected from various sources such as corporate houses, individual donors and several other source that are willing to help children and sponsor their education. Several branches of these societies are spread across the world so that they can smoothly work for the betterment of children of each region. In education sponsorship, the tuition fee is not only sponsor but the books and other study material is also sponsored. Sponsorships for every academic courses are provided, which encourage the child to take the field of their choice.

Societies not only sponsor education for children but it also perform several other functions such as establishing educational institutions, extending educational facilities to remote areas of the region, and also upgrade these institutions for the betterment of children of different areas. Educational programs carried out by these societies are regularly improvised so that the best from the education field is offered to the children. Like as per the current trend computer education is also incorporated with the education programs so that children are able to receive computer education along with the conventional education. This will further help in the overall development of the children.

Mitigate Crime, Poverty and Drug Use Through Education

Saturday, May 16th, 2009
Rocco Basile is a man from Brooklyn, New York who has impressed me with regard to his beliefs about how we can all help to make changes in our world today through education.

Rocco Basile noted something that Gandhi believed. Real education consists in drawing the best out of yourself. What better book can there be than the book of humanity? (Mahatma K. Gandhi)

“My education taught me to be sympathetic to the needs of others and helped me understand how that can change a world. Like Gandhi said it is important for us to be the change we want to see in the world,” said Rocco Basile.

The US Department of Education (ED) tagline states, “Promoting educational excellence for all Americans.” This organization was created in 1980 and the ED mission is “to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.”

Some 4,500 ED employees and a $71.5 billion budget dedicated to establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, as well as distributing and monitoring the funds; collecting data on America’s schools and disseminating research; focusing national attention on key educational issues; and prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal access to education.

For example, in Brooklyn, New York, gang violence is just part of everyday life. There are 17 thousand child abuse cases in this community that have been documented. One out of every three families lives below the poverty line. There is a 48 percent drop out rate among high school students, so out of the 30 thousand students, 15 thousand are dropouts. Drugs, disease, gang violence, and crime contribute to about a thousand deaths annually. More and more people are realizing that the answer is education.

“I feel my education has allowed me to understand the adverse effects it had on my life. I was educated, therefore I was able to read many books from every culture and religion, which inspired me to make positive changes,” he continued. “It has given me the intuition to see how positive change circulates back into my life.”

What happens to those in society that don’t invest in education? Does it make a difference to the overall social structure and eventually affect our economy? William Schweke, author of a book entitled “Smart Money: Education and Economic Development” believes that prevention is almost always cheaper than treatment. He states that if we do not invest now, we most certainly will pay later and discusses the social costs of inadequate educational and workforce preparation opportunities, believing that by increasing earnings, education can lower social costs.

Schweke notes that there is a strong relationship between low basic skills and welfare dependency. 60 percent of out-of-wedlock births among 19 to 23-year-olds are to those who score in the lowest 20 percent on basic skills tests. About 82 percent of all Americans in prison are high school dropouts. Sadly, he also points out that the United States spends almost 10 times as much as Western European countries on security services, arrest, incarceration and parole, while these same countries spend comparable amounts on subsidized employment and training.

Many people like these men believe that educating our youth is the answer to will break the cycle of poverty, crime and drugs. “Educating our youth is the foundation for prosperity … Economic problems, in turn, exacerbate social problems, such as crime, drug abuse, gangs, reliance on government assistance, and family break-ups. To ameliorate these weaknesses in the social fabric, public funds that might otherwise go toward productive investment are spent instead on crime control, drug treatment and income support programs,” says Schweke. “Education positively affects income distribution.”

In the darkness, there is an organization in Brooklyn, New York that is bringing light and making a difference to help do something about these statistics. There are hundreds of people in need of intervention, children in need of education, and families in need of counseling, and hope, and Children of the City is an organization making a difference.

Founded in 1981, the volunteer-based outreach connects people in need with basic services, educational and employment training, health care, counseling, and many other personal growth opportunities. People like Rocco Basile are working through organizations like this helping to reach children at risk and who can be resilient if they are given the right intervention and education.

Education- an All Embracing Concept

Thursday, May 14th, 2009
Education is a microcosm of all that is indispensable to life. It is next to impossible to undermine the vitality of education in the progress of society as envisaged by the great many leaders and common masses. Even before we delve into the various concrete streams of education which exist today, it is imperative to understand the word ‘education’.

“Education transcends books”- a dictum which has withstood the trials and ravages of centuries and has etched its existence boldly in the minds of one and all. On retrospection one would invariably realize that education had augmented its roots from the time when evolution of man began. In fact it would be apt to conclude that had it not been for education in its varying forms, evolution of man was both an improbability and impossibility. Over the centuries we have learnt to ‘learn’ and ‘imbibe’ the best- this is the spirit of education.

Reverting to the 21st century, education has encompassed all barriers of classroom walls and has become more comprehensive. Just about three decades ago only three major strands were popular among the youth to be pursued for a career viz., medicine, engineering or government service. Sounds like history. Isn’t it? Globalization and increased exposure to international education standards coupled with the advent of multifarious job opportunities provided by multinational companies has ensured that a plethora of career and educational options are available to students. Gone are the days when education was bound in books with little or no attention being paid to the practical aspect of the subject and the student’s aptitude and personality. The increased competition is an evidence of the expansion of education beyond books and theory.

Innumerable career options today lay unfolded for students within the realm of education. To begin with, let us review some of the popular competitive entrance exams which have nullified the emphasis laid on marks obtained through cramming. The most coveted career option today is that of management. Thousands aspiring to be an MBA appear for the CAT exam every year. Clearing the CAT means that the 6 Indian Institutes of Management open their gates for the successful candidates. Never mind if you can’t get through CAT, MAT, SNAP and XAT are some of the other management entrance exams conducted by other institutes which will help you achieve your dream of being a management graduate.

Though MBA is the call of the day, Engineering and Medical profession still retain their charm. The key difference now is that the entrance exams for admission to reputed engineering and medical institutions have become more challenging. To get through to engineering, hundreds queue up each year to take the JET- Joint Entrance Test- and AIEEE i.e., All India Engineering Entrance Exam. PMT – Pre-Medical Test- too sees an ever increasing turnout of aspiring medicos each year. Administrative services still woo many by the hordes. That’s why the IAS or Indian Administrative Services Exam is becoming tougher by the day.

Even if you wish to study abroad, you are required to clear IELTS which stands for International English Language Testing System. It is a comprehensive exam designed by the Cambridge University to assess a candidate’s English language skills in all the four aspects viz. reading, listening, writing and speaking. Most of the US universities accept scores of exams like TOEFL, GRE, GMAT and SAT for admission.

Education, as we can see, has now assumed a more significant role. Most of the institutes and colleges hold entrance exams to assess the real ability of a student. Therefore it could be said that education has now blossomed and its myriad ‘petals’ are exuberant with all the hues displayed.

To end I would like to quote B.F Skinner, who very aptly said, “Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten.”

So be educated, stay educated and spread education.

Further Education. Is It Worth It ?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009
Education increases a person’s ability to comprehend issues better with a better outlook. It also increases the perspective of a person. The result is that the person’s ability to seek information for itself and look for literature for better alternative ideas improves considerably.

Back to School?

In this economic crisis what we need is to plan our finances for long term achievements. Students increase their future opportunities for better salary packages and better prospects only after further education. Good career has roots of a good educational background. Higher education not only improves the remuneration figure but also gives an individual job satisfaction and expand his or her business network as well. A good quality graduate education helps to improve not their personal progression as an individual, but are highly beneficial to their organization and even at a national level as well. This is especially so in countries like Singapore, Sweden and Finland where human capital development are their main competitive asset in the global economy. Education should not be considered as a means to an end but as means to enrich their lives and of those around the.

Graduate Education is worth far more than for a fiscal reason.

In tough economic situation like today, people sound miserable when they talk about recession they are in reality deceiving themselves by promoting negative views on how the economic turmoil is devastating peoples’ life and this prediction is actually stopping them living their lives. But they must understand the fact that it is precisely in times like this that the more qualified you are the better it is for your career. To say that education is not worth it in this financial climate proves how short sighted we are. The need of the day is to educate individuals so that similar recession can never recur. The value of a quality graduate education ranks much higher in the mind of prospective employers, graduate schools like INSEAD, Chicago and The City University of New York are flourishing in Singapore, attracting experienced professionals across ASEAN.

The forecast – the recession might be temporary and variant, but higher education is compulsory to enjoy a better life when the downturn fades out

If acquiring a degree requires three long years of investment of time and money, it is bound to scare the students. However, students can avail of student loans from the various banks today and start studying for a higher degree course. In the three years’ time, they would get enough time to prepare and ready themselves for a job after the completion of the course. By the time they will finish their degrees, the recession is going to be over and there will be enough jobs for them to grab and make it big!

Students, however will have to be more conscious about their financial situation. Several finance companies offering loans which are to be repaid only when they start earning over 15,000 GBP and the repayments start at 5 GBP per week, favor the case of students. Student debt, hence is one of the safest loans to opt for, while the best fight against the recession is to opt for higher studies. Furthermore, the success lies in taking advantage over those who have wrong reasons and ideas against further studies.

We can overcome!

Lastly, The Tripartite Centre for Fair Employment has given the WPP agency a plan to transform the approach of employers to adopt “fair and merit-based workplaces”. The WDA has also structured the WPP agency to craft a national education campaign to give confidence to Singaporeans so that they do not hesitate to enter further education. This is to boost their morale and get ready as employment is supposed to rise above 3 million by this year itself! WDA also launched a series of graduate diplomas and post graduate diplomas under the Professional Conversion Programmes (PCP) which helps Professionals, Managers, Engineers and Technicians (PMET)s to explore career switches and advancement.

So exactly how much value can be placed on further education today?

Talk to anyone in the industry, everyone recognized the value of a quality graduate education. An enhanced education will play a significant role cause regardless of economic conditions, time tested attributes like experience, qualifications and right attitudes always survives.

Online Education – the Best Education Option in a Recession

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
The credit crunch and stock market crash will have an impact on households’ income and their ability to pay for college. The tuition fee, room, books, travel and other college expenses are continuing to soar while the economy has worsened. With today’s economy situation, it will be much more difficult to obtain a student loan. Parents are looking for alternative education options for their children and online education has came out to be the best education option that meets the tight education budget of the parents.

Prior to this economy crisis, students who choose to pursue their degree online are mainly enjoying the benefits of online education that give them flexibility study environment, but with economy downturn that leads to a recession, cost effectiveness of online degrees may become the key factor that divert many of pro campus-based parents and students to opt for online education.

Getting a degree through online education program can be a good option in the recession period. As the online education enable students to logon to the classes from their home or any location at their convenient, it eliminates the hassle of traveling to and from the college, while helping to save in term of traveling cost. Students who study at campus-based college that is far away from their home may need to relocate by renting a room and a house that close by; this additional cost can be saved by pursuing the same degree offered through online education.

Most learning materials used in online degree programs are in digital format that can be downloaded from the online learning system of the school. Although the online colleges may add some charges to the downloadable online learning materials, it still a saving if compare to the cost needed to purchase those printed books and references required by campus-based colleges.

Another key advantage of online education to be the best education option for those who have tight education budget is the online students can choose to work while pursuing their degree. Most online degree programs have some sort of flexibility that allows the students to plan their own pace of study. This advantage enables the students who are working for extra income to plan for their study time that fit into their working schedule. Moreover, the students who are working do not need to rush to college after work; instead, they can go home and take a bath and nice dinner before they logon to the online class from their comfort home.

Summary

In the bad economy situation, education for children still needed to be invested for their better future. But, with online education, parents have a better education option that can meet their children education requirement while fulfilling their tight budget plan.

Education Loans – an Insight

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
Loans taken for funding or financing further education are called education loans. Education loans can be used to finance higher education or costlier education courses. Also, these loans facilitate its borrower to utilize them for further studies as well as allowing him/her to pay back with easy and flexible repayment options.

Designed to support your educational needs and financial requirements, educational loans are further of many types.

Education loan types depending upon the lender are-

Federal loans: Federal loans are the most flexible and suitable as well as acceptable loan with numerous advantages such as low interest rate and low monthly repayment.

Credit loans: If a student or family has good credit record and decent credit history then they can utilize their credit to obtain loan with lower interest rate and loan fee.

Private loans: Private loans are the loans taken from private lenders. These loans can be taken to support other loans and has their own repayment and interest rate conditions.

Education loans types also depends on the various kinds of beneficiary i.e. education loans can be taken by students, parents or undergraduates and more. In education loan system both the student and parent loans can take loan.

Parent loan is the kind of loan taken by parents to support the educational requirements of their children. There are times when a student can not apply for a loan due to some conditions such as age factor at that time parent can take loan on behalf of their children for funding their educational needs. In a parent loan, parents are responsible for the repayment of the loan.

Student loan is a financial help which allows students to continue their further education. It is a loan program designed as per a student’s convenience and helps them to meet the higher and costly education. A student loan does not just allow a student with easy repayment and lower interest programs but also provides with the advantage of planning a future with relaxed mind. Before taking such loans a student need to understand the responsibility and seriousness behind them. Thus just like any other loan, student loan has to be taken only as a last alternative.

Loan consolidation:

A student consolidation loan is a flexible loan program that combines various loans into one single loan for financing your education. Consolidation loans are more or less like a bundle of advantages which aim at providing a student with financial relief and allow him or her with the privilege of further education. The very first and foremost advantage of a loan consolidation is the flexible interest rate. Consolidation loan allows a student in earning or grabbing the feasible lowest interest rate. The low interest rate provided by consolidation program is quite a money saver, unlike other interest rate schemes provided by banks or credit loans. A consolidation program also acts as an ideal key when it comes to repayment as a consolidation loan allows a longer repayment program which gives you the benefit of smaller payments and a time for planning and managing the payments.

A consolidation program also offers fixed interest rate and single payment monthly. This fixed interest and conversion of monthly payments into one payment acts as a benefit for students, in trouble-free as well as planned repayment and loan returns.

Repayment option:

Education loan repayment system is flexible and beneficial has been designed to meet the needs of each student. The two types of repayment options are:

-standard payment option

-graduated payment option

Mostly students and parents prefer standard payment option as with a standard payment option the loan payment remains same and does not change. If you have confidence of earning a job as soon as you graduate then with a standard payment you can pay back your entire loan with relaxed mind. But if you are not sure of finding a job so soon then you must go for graduated plan which offers low monthly repayment facility. In this plan you can look for a job while you are also paying small returns of your loan.

But just like any other like loan plan an education loan plan is also a pack of both advantages and disadvantages. Where in standard payment option you don’t get any low payment facility, in graduated payment program your payment amount starts increasing after a specific time period which can put burden on you on a later stage. Thus it is very important for a student to think and opt for the most suitable repayment, option keeping in mind the various aspects of the option, in order to stay away from defaulted education loan. A defaulted education loan is a situation which comes when a student or the parent fails to pay or if the beneficiary is paying far less than required. A defaulted education loan can act as a trouble by affecting loan credit report or by burdening the interest rate.

An education loan can act as a right choice if you are dedicated and have planned your steps starting from the loan option to the loan repayment. Taking a loan for further studies and returning it after you start earning is an advantage you should not miss on, unless you have a wealthy relative or winning lottery ticket. But before a loan you need enough thinking and planning to sustain your journey of loan and loan repayment.

It’s what we call incidental learning and our screensaver is all about it. It shows some principle scientific and cultural information in history, geography, biology, astronomy in a casual way. If you constantly exposed to this information, there is no other chance but to absorb it!”

Cool Educational Screensaver has a special mode – Content Wizard, which opens upon installation and lets user set up the delivery and playback of educational videos. You can, for example, change channel preferences, and select a desirable background audio. Then you update the index of lessons by connecting the Cool Educational Software’s website and pick your first course to learn. Cool Educational Software updates the lesson database regularly – every day there are a lot of new lessons available!

A lesson about Pharaohs (the “Ancient Egypt” course of Astronomy channel) was taken for this review. It presents some basic data and interesting cultural facts about Ancient Egypt, pictures and photos of the Pharaos. The information is well-organised and the educational video itself looks just fine.
